In my work, I look to help be a voice for those who are silenced, and create artworks and installations that enhance and encourage inclusive communities.
The start of my artistic growth in this body of work began with recreating images in my own way with given mediums. I then began focusing on concepts of resilience and solidarity, seeking to highlight the beauty in the marginalized. I used the juxtaposition of the real with the abstract, synthesizing materials and techniques through this concept.
As I transitioned to 3D media, I looked to continue my interests in resilience and solidarity but expand upon these themes with interactive elements. I focused on community involvement and physical awareness, with spaces or structures that actively employed the viewer in these experiences.
My artwork seeks to highlight the beauty in each person, the power of community, and our connection to an authentic reality. My mixed media pieces primarily stem from experiences I’ve had with the homeless in Cleveland and the city itself. In discovering the generalized misconceptions of the marginalized, I’ve become passionate about expressing their inner beauty and the solidarity we share with them. I likewise express community and inclusion through my interactive and process-based art, where the creation and use of the work can be as powerful as the finished product. I invite others to be a part of my projects, for example inviting the community to add post-its with “words of encouragement” or documenting the way groups interact with my series of unity benches. People responding and connecting with my installations is a testament to the strength of unity within my community, while I hope my whole body of work makes clear the beauty in it.
