With the past year being such a challenging time for so many people, I wanted to focus on bringing joy to the viewer and to me. I began by asking my closest family members and friends about the sources of happiness in their lives, breaking them down into levels of pleasure, passion, purpose, and ultimate good. From there, I asked myself about my own happiness and the people who have influenced me. With many pieces being found-object-based art, I began to envision my work being placed in an environment that I would create to immerse the viewer into my investigation. I had to ask myself what this environment would be like and how that would make the viewer feel.
Creating my sustained investigation required a lot of practice and experimentation. After doing a 2D portfolio my Junior year and making 2D art most of my life, I was motivated to step out of my comfort zone to create my investigation. I began by experimenting with how I could take media that I am most familiar with, like photography, and translate them into 3D work. In that process, I also began to experiment with found object art. As I moved on, I searched for more objects that I connected to that I could repurpose.
